A great book for EarthBound fans

Mother 2: Giygas Strikes Back! Ness's Adventure Chronicle (try saying that five times fast!) is a pretty neat book. It was written and illustrated by Benimaru Itoh, a man whose work you might not realize you know! His résumé includes comic adaptations of Star Fox, Super Metroid, and The Legend of Zelda: A Link to the Past and he has even lent his talents to the Game Boy Advance Kirby games. But most importantly in the context of this review, he designed the characters in Mother 2( EarthBound)!
Ness's Adventure Chronicle is not the game, which is excellent, but rather it could be seen as Itoh's version of the story. The beginning is more or less the same: A meteorite crashes into a hillside, a boy named Ness investigates it, and meets and alien who tells him that he must embark on a journey to defeat the evil cosmic destroyer, Giygas. From there, the story changes drastically, and I wish I was better at reading kanji so I can try to make sense of it all.
But even though my Japanese skills are somewhat lacking, as an artist, I really do appreciate the Astro Boy-esque art work. It lends a sort of nostalgia to the manga and in that sense, it is very true to the game. Scratch that. In spite of ALL the changes (and many will find the manga version of Mr. Saturn's character design quite jarring), I think Ness's Adventure is very true to the original game. In the meantime, I need to hit the Japanese textbooks!
