Thunder Force V is a true gem. No, it's more like a geode: Rough on the outside, but beautiful on the inside. In this case, the gameplay is fantastic. Although the sprites have been swapped for choppy polygons and much of the hittable scenery has been removed, the game plays like a true evolution of the series with new weapons and new strategies. Enemy patterns make good use of the side-view 3d perspective, incorporating depth into their patterns. Fans of Thunder Force will notice nods to earlier Thunder Force games, though it never feels like uncreative fan service (ala Thunder Force 6).
The Saturn version of the game sports many graphical effects not found in the PlayStation edition, although the PlayStation version runs more smoothly.
