This amazing collection of early violinists comes from the dawn of recorded history. Some, like the headliners mentioned in the artist listing, may be still well remembered (all three were also fine composers). Some are extremely obscure. But anyone seriously interested in the history of the violin will want to hear this collection. Joachim, who inspired Brahms and other composers, was a faded performer by 1903, but a powerful personality still comes through. Sarasate, still in his prime in the same year, is simply one of the most impressive violin virtuosi who ever recorded. Both musicians' recordings are presented complete. Others in the collection include Kreisler, Thibaud, Kubelik, Szigeti (very early, in uncharacteristic dazzling performances of Hungarian showpieces), and many lesser celebrities, most impressive among them Franz von Vécsey. Although there are similar collections available, the sound quality on this set makes it far preferable to the others. You can actually hear what is going on clearly, with minimal surface noise, even in the 1900 sides! Tully Potter's intelligent program notes are another worthwhile bonus. --Leslie Gerber

Love these old recordings of great artists. There is something pure about it. I don't mind that the recording has deficiencies. It is more than made up for by the violinists themselves who seem to be trying to achieve a cohesion with the piece itself as opposed to perfect fingering. Love it! Most pieces seem to be chamber music with a piano accompanying.

In some ways it is difficult to give a review of the performances on these recordings. They come from an era when recording was in its infancy, and this may have affected things. I don't know, for example, if the violinists had to cram, or rush, their performance to fit with the short length of time available for recording then, because some performances give this impression. Of course it may reflect some performance conventions at the time also (which I believe was the case). A few years later, one could get sets of 78s with full performances of longer works that, a few years further, would then fit on to one side of an LP. There is yet more space with today's digital technology. With all this in mind, the recordings here are therefore perhaps better considered documents of the playing rather than historic performances.

After listening to these, I suspect technical standards of violin playing have also risen since then. Though to be fair, each violinist shows he, or she, would still be a good instrumentalist by today's standards despite the limitations of the recording. Kreisler, Szigeti and Thibaud, whose earliest entries in the studio are on show here, were later to make significant "historical" recordings which are still available and show this beyond all doubt. In their cases, reputations are probably better assessed from their later performances. Other names not well represented in recording catalogues who I have heard of, but not heard their playing previously include Jan Kubelik and Marie Hall. Some other names, such as Bernhard Dessau and Henri Marteau appear have largely disappeared into history books. There are notes supplied which establish their credentials. All are of interest. That said, I suspect the main reason most will want to purchase this CD set will be for the recordings of Joachim, Sarasate and Ysaye whose names are well established in violin history who I never expected to ever hear.

Joseph Joachim was a friend of Brahms to whom the composers great Violin Concerto is dedicated. He was perhaps the first violinist remembered as an interpretive musician who popularised the Beethoven Concerto rather than solely as a virtuoso, though he also composed. On a disk we hear his only recordings: five brief extracts that include interpretations of unaccompanied Bach that suggests a strong sense of musical line, and perhaps hint at the violinist's Hungarian origins, which are put to even greater effect in two transcriptions of Brahms as well as one of his own compositions. The recording of Brahms' Second Hungarian Dance especially shows violin pyrotechnics that would sound impressive if they were played today. Listening to it leaves me in awe as much of the playing as by the fact that I have had an opportunity to hear him.

Pablo de Sarasate's playing perhaps comes off slightly less well- but only slightly. We get a glimpse of a virtuosity which later recording techniques might have done more justice to. As with Joachim, there is also some unaccompanied Bach, perhaps less interpretively pure that starts at a furious pace, which somehow runs a little out of steam near the end- though this might have be due to aforementioned recording circumstances. The performances of his own works have additional historical interest because they come from the composer and are still in the repertoire. His performance of his Ziegeunerweisen is the one which comes of best which suggests a deep romantic tone in his playing. There are also other hints of great virtuosity even we are offered only a few tempting morsels.

Eugene Ysaye perhaps is most impressive of the three judged by modern standards. Pablo Casals was to say that Ysaye was the first violinist he heard play all the right notes in tune. We get a sense of this thanks to a more substantial fragment: a stylish performance of the last movement of the Mendelsohn Violin Concerto with piano accompaniment. One regrets there is no orchestra accompanying him as the performance is carried off with panache. His other recordings here also hint at why he was an inspiration to the next generation (including Kreisler and Heifetz) as well as being a great teacher.

These are essential disks for anyone seriously interested in the history of violin playing. If their value is more documentary than artistic, there is still pleasure in hearing every player. If the quality of recording is not up to later standards, what we are given could not have been better presented. I am grateful for the opportunity to hear these violin legends preserved.
