Although Mats Oberg and Morgen Agren (and the other band members) are quite well known as chop monsters, Thanks for Flying with Us is not a demonstration of chops. I feel that the best way for it to be described is that it is just plain old amazing music. The music resembles most closely instrumental jazz fusion, but is definatly far from being exactly that. Great rythmic intricicies and charming melodies make this album one of The Mats/Morgen Bands best Cds.
This is an uncommonly good and uncommonly creative CD. There is so much to like here, so many styles: fusion, progressive, electronica, dub, math rock, Japanese prog, etc. This is what really good (progressive) CDs do: meld tons of styles, and make it sound fresh and creative, and simplified in this case. I was hoping for a little more crazy shred drumming from Morgan - but the songs and flow are so good, I didn't miss anything!
