To start, I'm not the first foreigner/English speaker to be constantly lurking the Amazon Japan site for rare BD/DVD/CD collectibles/releases. Yes, the BD/DVD/CD prices are high (compared to the U.S. market); the international shipping charges put another $punch$ in your shopping cart; and there's always a risk of having your package stuck in U.S. customs. So why are we still lurking on the Amazon JP site? Because "Made in Japan" is always worth it...!
I'm not good with retelling storylines. If you're here reading reviews to be convinced on purchasing Nanoha the Movie 1st...you're obviously a NanoFate fan. I'm here to focus on what many international online shoppers want to know about the product and with the 12+ Japanese words we know when ordering sushi doesn't help at all.
The Feature (for the BD version):
Pure 1080p High Definition of emotions, action, colors, and DTS/PCM lossless sound! The details from the inscriptions on Starlight Breaker / Thunder Rage magic rings can actually be read on my 42" TV. That is if you can read the "lost world" language. Vibrant, airy, and moving....
The Box & Book (for the BD Limited Edition):
- The Box - just think iPhone - it's shiny, solid, and attractive. But once you lay your fingers on it...it's well, fingerprinted/personalized for life. White gloves recommended.
- The Book - there are actually two books - beautifully printed and well-designed. One focuses on the characters, story, etc., while the other focuses on the production details of the discs. The latter ranges from similar character/story info, but goes further to included scene/chapter descriptions, cast & staff, lyrics to OP/ED, ads for Nanoha goods (I want the matching mugs), and even a short from the Nanoha the Movie 1st Comics (in color).
I am grateful that anime producers/creators are venturing into the English market. However, I do have feedbacks as a member of your international audience:
a. Printed materials - the Nanoha books already grasped the concept of bilingual information. Even though the actual contents are not translated into English, they took the time to provide English headlines for sub-sections of the books, such as "CAST & STAFF", "ORIGINAL DRAWINGS", etc. (Translating all of the content would be a dream for us foreigners, but I understand the complexity. So no blame here.)
b. Menus on the disc - do not have English references for the buttons at all. Suprisingly the marketed title for Japan is in English, "Magical Girl Lyrical Nanoha", instead of just "魔法少女リリカルなのは". So I guess some international consideration was already planned for the movies. I see: "ALL PLAY", "TV SPOT something", and "JAPAN EXPO 2010" for the bonus disc. The rest, you'll find out when you play it. I'm not implying that the producers should do multiple menu languages, but maybe consider adding "smaller" English text below the same Japanese graphics button.
c. Subtitles - wow, I don't know where to begin on this topic:
Colors - what were you thinking? Is charcoal black really the choice for viewing subtitles in high definition for Japan?? It's so dim and depressing...it camouflages with Fate's black barrier cape and makes you want to wipe your TV thinking that there was dirt on Nanoha's white barrier jacket throughout the movie. Good grief...it's such an eyesore that I actually turned OFF the English subtitles halfway and watched the movie not knowing more than 12 words of Japanese. Good thing I had the storyline for TV season one memorized [blush]. I did struggle with the Precia/Lilinth storyline because it's new for the movie - the smoggy subtitles had to come back ON. I am in the DVD/Blu-ray production industry in Hollywood, and I also have 7+ years of subtitling experience for DVD/BD. Please, please justify to me this RGB color decision.... I'm not crazy...look at the theatrical Japanese subtitles for Raising Heart and Bardiche's English dialogue - they're NOT charcoal black. It's white with a nice drop shadow!
Honorifics - please don't underestimate us foreigners when it comes to honorifics. We want it! Seeing "Fate!" subtitled on the screen and hearing "Fate-chan!" is just not the same, emotionally.
Proper names - oh my, my, my... I fell off my chair when I saw the subtitle, "I'm Nanoha Takamachi." It should be "I'm Takamachi Nanoha." We are very adaptive mammals, so no need to dummy down for us. [sigh]
Bonus materials & Commentary track - are not subtitled. [tears] Only the feature is subtitled (for those who are hopeful). I want subs for the commentary track and the seiyuu interview. [more tears]
In the end, I am still grateful that one of my favorite anime got the English treatment. Hence, the 5-star rating from me. I also purchased KANON 2006 (BD Limited Edition) and SUZUMIYA HARUHI TV Set (BD Limited Edition). They're still in shrink wrap. I'll get to them after I finish watching Nanoha the Movie 1st for the 5th time (without the English subtitles that I originally paid for). :P
