This package contains two different live albums that are wonderfully mastered.
Of the two, "Live" is the better album (though both are excellent). "Live" was originally released in early 1972 while "In Performance" was released posthumously in 1980.
Marvin Gaye had created his great "What's Going On" album mainly on the inspiration of Donny Hathaway's earlier album "Everything is Everything". Here in "Live", Donny returns the tribute by beginning with his version of Marvin's title song ("What's Going On") and ends "Live" with his own title song of "Everything is Everything". To experience one of the greatest trilogies in music history, one ought to play Hathaway's "Everything is Everything" album first, followed by Marvin Gaye's nearly perfect album "What's Going On", and then ending that experience with Hathaway's "Live" album.
"In Performance" is the weaker of the two albums in this set, but any live material from Hathaway is extremely precious, and his live version of "We need you right now" is especially sweet.

This CD is one my favorite Donny Hathaway performances. His death left a giant hole in the entertainment industry in that he was a musical genius. Some say that his music was depressing. Although some of his songs were a little downbeat he told it like it was. He made the world recognize the "Ghetto."
My favorite cut on this CD is Everything is Everything and of course The Ghetto.
..and yet, no one will ever come close to Willy Weeks' stupendous work on the P-Bass (contrary to widespread opinion, it WAS indeed a P-Bass). Such an elegant bassist, but, and that is his greatness, he's never a selfish busybody, overshadowing those he's hired to support. Even on the extended solo he is granted on the final track, Weeks' playing is seminal in its melodic build-up while maintaining rhythmic competency and 'pocket' throughout.
What can I say, I often listen to these numbers, and, with no disrespect to Donny, tune everyone out but the bass.
Donny Hathaway was an amazing talent, with a troubled soul. He was always at his best live, this is a master at work. This is Hathaway's 2 live albums together in one place, and well remastered by Steve Hoffman to give you that "you are there" feel. Hathaway's talent shines in his natural environment!
