5.0 No problems with the digital copy in Canada, and the film is great!

I almost didn't buy this version as someone else had said they had problems with the digital copy. I redeemed mine from my IPAD. Just make sure to set your country as Canada when you get to DigitalCopyPlus.com and you should have no problems getting your iTunes code.

Having the film in three different media form is great and I wish all movies came this way. We can watch the movie on the go on my iPad, or at home on our TV hooked up to the Apple TV, in our media room on blu ray and upstairs on DVD. Brilliant! We are a bilingual french/English household, and the only thing with the digital copy is you get either English or French, but even if I had purchased the movie on iTunes, it would have been in only one language or the other.

The film itself is great. The music is catchy, and the story line is heart warming. As adults, we enjoyed this film and, although it is done with modern animation techniques, it reminds me of classic Disney princess films. I believe that this movie is the best Disney movie to come out since Mulan or The Little Mermaid. If you have little girls, or you were a little girl, or if you like musicals, this is sure to be a hit.

I really must admit that I wasn't sure what to make of Frozen in the months leading up to its release. That first trailer, while funny, told us nothing of the story. And just what was it going to be about? After it opened, I started hearing good things about it, but still I hesitated. I was stupid.

The movie tells the story of two sisters who happen to be princesses. Elsa is the older sister, and she has a power - she can create snow and ice all on her own. When playing one day, she accidentally injures her younger sister Anna. From that day forward, she hides from her sister and tries to learn to control her gift.

Things really pick up on Elsa's (voiced by Idina Menzel) coronation day. For the first time in years, the palace will be opened, and Anna (Kristen Bell) is thrilled to actually get to spend time with people. But then Elsa's secret gets out, and she flees. Anna sets out after her, but can she find her sister in the frozen world that has been created? And will Elsa be willing and able to reverse the winter wonderland she's created?

This movie is a bit different from your ordinary Disney movie. While yes, there is a villain, the main conflict comes from the sisters, how they view the world, and how Elsa's gift affects them. I realized this when the villain's comeuppance wasn't really the climax of the piece. But I think that actually worked well for the movie. I certainly am not complaining.

The film is so much fun. I was laughing within the first few minutes but then I was feeling emotion just a couple of minutes later. That continued for the entire course of the film, and it's easy to see why audiences are so drawn to this film. It is storytelling at its best.

And that comes from the characters. Elsa and Anna are both very real, and that makes the story that much more alive. The rest of the characters are good as well, with Olaf the Snowman completely stealing the show. Again, it's because of the characters you care about the outcome and are feeling the joy and sorrow of the piece.

The voice actors are outstanding. They never miss a beat going from comedy to drama flawlessly. You forget they are there and focus completely on the story and the characters they are bringing to life.

I can't leave out the songs. Like the movie itself, they range from the purely comic to the heartfelt character building and will leave you humming as you go out the theater. All of the cast sings their own songs. Kristen Bell is not known for her singing voice, but she should be. Considering she has duets with Broadway powerhouse Idina Menzel and more than holds her own, she needs more chances to shine.

The animation is stunning. The winter landscape created for the movie is beautiful to look at - you can almost feel the cold creeping off the screen as you watch. The ice castle is amazing to behold.

I don't necessarily go to the movies looking for the themes - I mainly go to be entertained. And yet there are some great themes to this film as well. Since they come out of the plot and struggle the characters grow through, I don't want to give anything away. Just keep yours eyes opened and you'll pick up on them by the end.

Finally, I have to mention the Mickey Mouse short that starts things out. It's a mash up of old and new animation. I wasn't sure about it at first, but I got quite a kick out of it by the end. Plus I loved to see Mickey's old pals Horace and Clarabelle being used in it.

While I blamed a busy six weeks on not having seen Frozen sooner, I should have tried harder. This movie is charming and funny with some great themes. I can't recommend it highly enough.

5つ星のうち5.0 Outstanding Blu Ray release

This won't cover the movie, that's been reviewed plenty before the DVD and Blu Ray were released, so this will cover the actual Blu Ray.

Unfortunately as with so many, there's a bunch of previews right away, but at least here you can skip them. I'm so tired of discs that don't let you skip past them, and was very glad here we could.

My son is 10 and loves this movie, since he's totally obsessed with the music in it. We didn't see it in the theaters until Feb, several months after it was first released. We got the expanded soundtrack within minutes of getting home, and it's the only thing he's let me play in the car for over a month and a half now. When the digital download was released, I got that to hold us over until the Blu Ray release. It was disappointing in that it had such poor sound, stereo only. And of course it was rather compressed, so even the 1080 version wasn't very impressive.

So when I got this one playing, I felt stunned because it's such a night and day comparison to the iTunes version I have. I use a Media Center PC so anything I watch, or any of my movies, all play on my 55" LED TV. But I dislike having to use iTunes for watching movies in my setup, I prefer my own Media Browser system to watch my digital movies, or my Xbox One for watching Blu Ray discs. The PC I use has a blu ray player, but the software has a tendency to get the audio out of sync slightly, which is annoying.

Extras - it has the "Get a Horse" short that my son loved, several version of the music video, and not just the English versions. It has a very slick extra that talks about some things in the 40's where they initially had assigned a production number to "The Snow Queen" even though it was never realized. This video also had some of the artwork from one of the original Disney artists, I don't recall his name, but there were some really nice shots of some of the things he drew along the Ice Queen theme, and the producers of Frozen talked with his widow about some of his drawings, and compared some of the things they incorporated that they recognized in his work. There is also a "Deleted Scenes" bit that has pseudo animation by taking the storyboard shots and running them one after another to give some sense of motion. But nothing in there really impressed me, and I can see why they were cut. Interestingly enough though was a storyboard about when Elsa was originally going to be "Evil" at the beginning of the work on the project.

But back to the picture quality - amazing. I'm watching it now, and after having seen the iTunes version so many times, I just keep gasping at each scene, and how amazing it looks now compared to what we're used to. Surround sound is well done, and it's nice getting the voices out of the center channel and music out of the sides and rear as well as the sound effects. Even in the "Get a Horse" short the surround sound aspects were well done for when Mickey flies the "cow airplane" around behind the audience.

Bright, vibrant, and no "washing out" of any of the colors. It's great being able to pause it to see details so clearly, like the cameo of Rapunzel and Flynn.

All in all, this will likely be one of the more played DVD's in our Pixar / Disney collection for quite some time, and it was well worth buying. I'd give it more stars if I could.

5つ星のうち5.0 Disney's Frozen

I've never watched a movie twice in theaters before Frozen. The story, characters, music, animation, and level of detail in Frozen all cohesively come together to make it a very enjoyable and memorable movie. The theme of familial (more specifically, sisterly) love in contrast with the cliche theme of romantic love is refreshening, to say the least. These are my other notable impressions that made me think that Frozen was not just another animated princess-romance movie, but one that actually had depth (spoilers start below):

CHARACTERS
-Elsa is a multi-dimensional character. Though her powers are the cause of Arendelle's "eternal" winter, Elsa had no intention of harming anyone. This leaves the movie with a level of depth, as Elsa is not a traditional villain; instead, she is misunderstood. Her selflessness in wanting to protect her kingdom and Anna had ironically harmed those she intended to protect. The scene of her transformation and "Let It Go" sends an underlying positive message of self-acceptance and empowerment.
-Anna, though a princess herself, is goofy, optimistic, and socially awkward at times. She's very relatable to a contemporary audience.
-Kristoff maintains a (mostly) platonic relationship with Anna through their adventures in the movie. Unlike Hans (initially), his care for Anna resembles that of a close friend. The fact that there is no Prince Charming/Hans that helps Anna achieve her goal of finding Elsa is another interesting aspect of the film.
-Hans is the master deceiver. But a few hints/subtle details that revealed his true intentions:In "Frozen Heart," the first song with the ice harvesters, the lyrics essentially foreshadow the main themes of the film (beauty and danger, etc). The entire song may actually describe Hans, based on Anna's last statement to Hans that "the only frozen heart around here is your's". In "Love Is An Open Door," Hans' true intentions to take over Arendelle are foreshadowed when he says something like "I've been searching my whole life to find my own place". ALSO, in the scene where he confronts Elsa at her ice palace, he glances up at the ceiling before aiming the guard's crossbow up at the chandelier, meaning that he purposefully did so in order to stage "an accident"!!!

MUSIC:
-Vuelie (opening song) and the reprise (ending) was simply majestic, and was an appropriate nod to Norwegian culture, which the premise of the film is based on.
-Transitions into the songs were excellent; they were smooth and natural in context of the scene, like an extension of a conversation.
-Kristen Bell and Idina Menzel's voices complemented each other very well in "For The First Time In Forever" and the reprise, while showing the contrasting characters of Anna and Elsa (Anna is optimistic; Elsa is struggling internally over her powers)
-Olaf's "In Summer" had a great comedic flair: "Winter's a good time to stay in and cuddle/Put me in summer and I'll be a-- happy snowman!" I was laughing so much from that line!
-And of course, "Let It Go" was the highlight! The range of emotion and pitch, and the powerful voice went perfectly with the lyrics of Elsa's transformation. FYI the video with the scene is on Youtube for the memories :)

ANIMATION/DETAIL (just some examples):
-The creation of the ice palace and the formation of snowflakes (branching, chandelier). My face -> :O
-The realistic portrayal of snow- how it acts when characters interact with it (google "A material point method for snow simulation"- it's incredible how so much technical research went into Frozen)
-The characters' realistic expressions of emotion- Anna's face when Elsa closed her bedroom door before "Do You Want To Build A Snowman" :( or how Elsa pulls her arms close to her chest when singing "For The First Time In Forever" reprise.

IN SUMMARY- undoubtedly one of the best animated films I have seen, EVER.

5つ星のうち5.0 SOO GOOD you won't want to "let it go"!

I'm a huge Disney buff and have been all my life. Whether it's DuckTales or Little Mermaid, there's rarely been a theatrical or television Disney release that I haven't gobbled up and cherished dearly. Disney's Frozen is no exception. This is by far, without a doubt, one of the best Disney movies in recent years. It blows Wreck-It-Ralph, Brave, & Tangled (all great though!) out of the water! This is Disney returning to form in fine fashion to their original animated musical format. Nearly every character is lovable and olaf will have you saying "I love sunshine and warm hugs" for weeks to come.

The soundtrack is amazing (and I recommend purchasing that as well) with amazing songs such as "Do You Want to Build a Snowman?", "For the First Time in Forever", and "Let it Go" that will stick in your head FOR-EV-ER. The aforementioned "Let It Go" will inevitably go down as one of the Disney greats in terms of songs and will cross generational barriers to be an everlasting favorite.

There are many "lessons" to learn in here for those looking to teach their children as they are entertained rather then just brain-rotting said children with South Park or American Dad. Morals such as not judging a book by its cover or losing faith, etc.

The animation is beautifully rendered (man animators have gotten really good at making realistic looking water!) and any disbelief in the premises or realism of events are easily suspended and will not leave you nitpicking with "thats so unrealistic" etc.

REALLY the only downside to this release, is the lacking of a simultaneous 3D release. I'm sure this will be released in the coming 6 months (probably in time for Christmas 2014 if I had to venture a guess) and will coax the somewhat inevitable and slightly greedy "double dipping" of many fans (purchasing the 3D release even though you already own the regular).

SPECIAL FEATURES:

The special features is the only area of lacking on this release. Although you do get a nice "Deleted Scenes" grouping in Story boarding format with a great introduction by the producers, the original "Get a Horse" Mickey Mouse short aired pre-movie theatrically, and multiple music video renditions of "Let It Go". The remaining two special features "D'Frosted - Disney's Journey From Hans Christian Andersen to Frozen" and especially "The Making of Frozen" leave a lot to be imagined. The latter "The Making of Frozen" runs at a mere 3 minutes and 18 seconds. I mean really... a making of featurette at under 4 minutes?! COME ON! I wouldn't have minded seeing some of the many youTube videos of Behind the Scenes voice recording sessions or some bloopers in said sessions (as I'm SURE there were PLENTY considering the cast!).

RECOMMENDATION:

If you don't own a 3D compatible TV & Bluray player and aren't planning on upgrading to one in the near future, PURCHASE this NOW!

If you do own a 3D TV & Bluray player, it might be worth it to hold off until the inevitable 3D re-release which I'm sure will also contain extra special features not contained on this version. In this case, I'd say REDBOX it in the mean time if you haven't seen it, just so you know how amazing of a ride you're in for once the 3D release surfaces!
