Fighter's History Dynamite (Karnov's Revenge here in the States) has a bit of a love/hate reputation with 2D fighting gamers. As the Neo Geo-only sequel to Data East's original Fighter's History (which in itself caught the attention of few, aside from Capcom's legal team) it understandably fell short of setting the world on fire upon its release.
Personally, I happen to be a fan of arcade fighters from this era of gaming, when memorizing combos, saving quarters, and ogling over screenshots in Diehard Game Fan was a way of life. If any of the above sent tingles of nostalgia down your spine, you will likely enjoy this title as well. In my opinion, few fighters represent such a perfect snapshot of the arcade fighter craze of the early-mid 90's.
As a port from the Neo Geo cartridge format, FHD on the Neo Geo CD shines. Every color, sound effect, and animation is present, with one BIG value-added: a retooled, fully instrumental soundtrack. The uninspired soundtrack was one of my main gripes with the cart version, and it is more than rectified here. Strings, drums, even a horn section are present in each of the tracks, which lend the on-screen battle a more epic feel. Add to all of this the very reasonable loading times, and you have a title which should be in any Neo Geo CD collector's library.
