“A rich, engrossing, and deeply intelligent story….This is a book I won’t soon forget.”
—Molly Wizenberg, bestselling author of A Homemade Life
“Fresh, smart, and consistently surprising. If this beautifully written book were a smell, it would be a crisp green apple.”
—Claire Dederer, bestselling author of Poser
Season to Taste is an aspiring chef’s moving account of finding her way—in the kitchen and beyond—after a tragic accident destroys her sense of smell. Molly Birnbaum’s remarkable story—written with the good cheer and great charm of popular food writers Laurie Colwin and Ruth Reichl—is destined to stand alongside Julie Powell’s Julie and Julia as a classic tale of a cooking life. Season to Taste is sad, funny, joyous, and inspiring.

Good value for money as always
I am not one to read memoirs - especially memoirs written by someone who at first glance has not lived a long life. I picked this book up primarily because of the discussion on the sense of smell and the fact that the author worked in one of my favorite restaurants. After about the first chapter, I found that I completely misjudged the author and that she truly has lived a remarkable life so far. In a generation where many seek the easy way out, the author demonstrates the creation and loss of a dream and how perseverance and creativity can make that person much stronger and more successful than before. Women like Molly Birnbaum give hope even in times of struggle, when all hope seems to be lost and dreams crushed, a path to success and happiness can be found.
In addition, the story of her boyfriend Matt was intriguing - going from the military to journalism and then being called back up to Afghanistan. The author's strength, while adjusting dreams, trying to gain back the sense of smell and dealing with a boyfriend far away is remarkable.
This book also taught me something about my senses - that the question "would you rather lose your sight or hearing?" should also include smell. I now appreciate smells of restaurants, the beach, the T and anything else much more - so thank you Molly for reminding me how truly special our sense of smell is.
