This review will be of this specific edition of De Anima, rather than on De Anima itself. Suffice it to say that De Anima is a text that is of interest to students of the history of science, religion, philosophy, and ancient Greece. I assume if you are considering purchasing this book, you already know that.
So what are the merits of this edition? The main attraction here is the commentary of Christopher Shields, who also translated the text and provides a general introduction to it. Shields is a big name in Aristotle scholarship who has published extensively on De Anima. He does a great job, in his commentary, of both explaining as clearly as possible the sometimes obscure or subtle moves Aristotle makes in the text, as well as flagging areas of interpretative dispute. He extensively cross-references to other parts of the Aristotelian corpus when relevant, as well as to the relevant secondary literature on a given passage or dispute.
Should you buy this edition over another, cheaper one? If you want to take a stab at really understanding Aristotle, I'd say yes, especially if you are a relative beginner. Undergraduate students, for example, will find this edition an absolute godsend. It is difficult to fully appreciate how dense and difficult Aristotle can be at times for modern readers, and the commentary goes a really long way towards ameliorating that problem. That this commentary also points to alternative views prominent in the literature and was written by a well-known and well-respected scholar is just the icing on an already pretty good cake.

The Clarendon Aristotle Series is designed for both students and professionals. It provides accurate translations of selected Aristotelian texts, accompanied by incisive commentaries that focus on philosophical problems and issues, The volumes in the series have been widely welcomed and favourably reviewed. Important new titles are being added to the series, and a number of well-established volumes are being reissued with revisions and/or supplementary material.
Christopher Shields presents a new translation and commentary of Aristotle's De Anima, a work of interest to philosophers at all levels, as well as psychologists and students interested in the nature of life and living systems. The volume provides a full translation of the complete work, together with a comprehensive commentary. While sensitive to philological and textual matters, the commentary addresses itself to the philosophical reader who wishes to understand and assess Aristotle's accounts of the soul and body; perception; thinking; action; and the character of living systems. It aims to present controversial aspects of the text in a neutral, fair-minded manner, so that readers can come to be equipped to form their own judgments. This volume includes the crucial first book, which the original translation in the Clarendon Aristotles Series omitted.

Excellent Edition

This is an amazing edition of one of Aristotle's most difficult, but rewarding texts. I have to say that Shields outdid himself with this volume. While many of the Clarendon volumes have excellent translations and commentaries, Shields' is far more in depth than most. His commentary is around 3x the length of the translation, and he really explores difficult points of Aristotle's thought. It has to be noted that his bibliography could have been a little expanded, but otherwise this is a great volume and translation. What is particularly welcome is the glossary of terms Shields provides, which many translators and commentators ought to emulate! Overall, a must buy if you are interested in Aristotle.

Precise translation with thorough, useful commentary for beginning and advanced students alike

This specific edition of De Anima, translated with an introduction and commentary by Christopher Shields, is an excellent edition for beginner and advanced students alike. I have attached a picture of the table of contents. The general introduction is the perfect summary to get the beginner situated to read the text. There is also a glossary of terms in the back, with a detailed description of the Greek word. The translation is precise and reliable. The commentary is extremely thorough and puts each argument in its context.
The only downside about this book is the way it is glued together. If you aren’t careful, some pages may fall out like mine did. I simply collected the pages and glued them back in. No other issues since.

Awful print quality

The contents are completely fine. That is not the subject of my review. I mean no offense, Mr. Shields. Rather, Oxford's print quality is utter garbage. If at all possible, try to buy used. These editions are hard on the eyes, and won't last 5 years.
