Benjamin Franklin Explains the Stamp Act Protests to Parliament, 1766 brings together a unique collection of primary source documents, organized and arranged as a dialogue, to examine the issues surrounding the Stamp Act. The selections--at the center of which is Benjamin Franklin's examination in Parliament on February 13, 1766--are meant to be read as a continuous dialogue among leading colonists in America and politicians in England. While the individual documents were separated in time and space, here they are reconstituted as part of a consistent whole--a trans-Atlantic conversation about the nature of the empire, the rights of the colonists, and the powers of Parliament at a critical moment in American and British history. Some liberty has been taken in their editing in order to emphasize this conversational quality. A chronology preceding the documents indicates the sequence of their production, and a bibliographical essay at the end of the documents directs students to useful secondary sources.

This slim but very enlightening 96 page volume spotlights a vital event in American History which is often overlooked, the passage of the Stamp Act in 1765 by Parliament. Lacking the same drama as the Boston Tea Party, the Stamp Act put Americans on the road to thinking about themselves as something other than Englishmen. The book is written in a clear, highly readable style, and is intended to give a rounded picture of the origin and impact of the law as viewed from both sides. The introduction exposes the thinking of members of Parliament in passing the bill , and the angry response of colonists, some of whom organized demonstrations, spawning the beginnings of the later named "Sons of Liberty". Franklin, a veteran newspaper publisher, scientist and Postmaster General of the colonies, was a respected and known public figure. He was called upon to help clarify American's reaction to the bill. About a third of the volume, written in simple question and answer format, is dedicated to the questions members of Parliament put to Franklin, and his answers. The author breaks in with occasional short paragraphs for the purposes of clarifying a point . The book is footnoted and indexed. A handful of pictures help illustrate the text. This is a well done volume, recommended for teachers of this time period and history buffs, or anyone with an interest in the events which lead to the American Revolution.
