The book isn't really a narrative about the Indycar series/CART/USAC. It's a collection of summaries of press releases and newspaper reports organized into roughly chronological order. It's almost painful to read.
The entire history of CART's rapid rise in the 80s is reduced to technical summaries of annual discussions about aerodynamics and slowing cars. Some topics are explored in minuscule detail (1990-91 Detroit Grand Prix paving issues), while others are handwaved or glossed over entirely (CART's IPO, the European venture). Discussions of CART's revolving door at CEO are reduced to "in and out" statements and (in the height of laziness) simple summaries of court pleadings.
Nothing is explained. No opinions are offered by the author. No behind the scenes info to help put anything in to context: You simply get a study of the contemporary press releases. Dozens of editing errors.
The sole redeeming quality are a few decent news stories that foreshadow the creation of the IRL in the late 80s/early 90s. Otherwise, useless.
The history of CART, the IRL, and the sport's attempted suicide demands a quality book. This isn't it.

The world of Champ Car auto racing was changing in the 1970s. As cars became more sophisticated, the cost of supporting a team had skyrocketed, making things difficult for team owners. In an effort to increase purses paid by racing promoters and win lucrative television contracts, a group of owners formed Championship Auto Racing Teams (CART) in 1978. Soon after, CART split from its sanctioning body, the United States Auto Club (USAC). Though Champ Cars ran on numerous tracks, the Indianapolis 500 was the payday that supported most teams through the season. From the beginning, CART had most of the successful teams and popular drivers, and they focused on driving a wedge between the track owners and the USAC. Over the next 30 years, the tension between CART and USAC ebbed and flowed until all parties realized that reunification was needed for the sake of the sport. This book details the fight over control of Champ Car racing before reunification in 2008.

Great book with lots of details regarding how the best racing series in the world kept shooting itself down. Greed by car owners, suppliers and track owners have almost destroyed this beautiful sport. Recommended for any motorsport and all IndyCar fans.

Mid-America? Lausitzing? Hatch Brands? Full of info (much gleaned from internet forums) but let down by the proofreading. Still worth reading.

Very well researched piece of work, although some of the highlights of the era were overshadowed by the ultimate demise of an entire sport.

Great information, lousy writing.

Very little flow to the writing - in need of some serious editing. No analysis of the information (facts) presented, although the facts themselves are detailed and comprehensive. Many times, paragraphs of information are plunked down in the midst of another narrative, or as a disjointed segue from discussion of one scenario to discussion of the next. And I would have loved some conclusions, even if they were only the author's opinion as to who bore responsibility for what (not that it would matter in the end).
That said, if you're curious about what happened to American open wheel racing, there's probably no better centralized source of information about it. Incredibly in-depth, and well-documented source material.
