I've done a good bit of genealogy in my time but I never heard stories quite as detailed as this! I can't imagine what would bring a family from the Quebec, Canada area to central Nebraska. I was shocked to learn that this story belonged to his grandfather in 1878, just 11 years after Nebraska became a state. That was certainly a different time and place from today!
I am honored to say that I know this author...well, I've known him through our local library group where his stories never fail to peak our interest and make us think! His memories from those long ago days are so clear! I'm 20 years younger and I don't have anywhere near the memory he does.
He says in the beginning of the book that "in an era when television and cell phone were not available, our family developed a strong tradition of storytelling" and that as the family gathered over the years, even though most had heard the stories before, they laughed as each new generation heard them. As time went on, he decided that he wanted to preserve those stories for future generations and so he began to write them down.
Don't think for a minute that this is just for his family or even his neighbors who also played a part over the years. These stories, or ones like them, could be told by most of our ancestors of those days (if they were still alive to tell them). They were hard times for most people. Len manages to teach without teaching, making you feel what he was feeling then and even now, in hindsight...and you are likely to see yourself in some of these "characters" from his real life.
I don't know if faith was as common back then as what he experienced in his home but he still seems to see things through those same "faith-tinted glasses" that his childhood taught him. What an amazing attitude in the midst of such hard times! If you're in need of some inspiration, I think you'll find it here. I know I sure did!

“Yesterdays - A Kernel of Hope on the Prairie” is a story about a pioneer family in Central Nebraska. It begins when the Grandfather migrates from Canada and eventually settles in East-Central Nebraska in 1878. The family started in a humble dugout and was advancing quickly until they got caught in the fallout from the great depression. At that point, life took some drastic turns as they had to adjust to a subpar house in a new community, that did not welcome them. After WWII, the family moved to a new farm and the family was doing well, until the untimely death of their parents required the six orphaned siblings to pull together to raise their young brother (8 yrs. old) to maturity.
This is a compilation of family stories that were told by the siblings and later written down to preserve the memories. Some are funny, some are serious, and some are heartbreaking. It is the authors hope that people in similar situations can find strength in these stories and gain hope to deal with situations, when life takes an unexpected turn.
This was the era before technology became prevalent so the pioneers had to deal with harsh weather, no electricity or indoor plumbing. They lived close to nature, horses were used for transportation and work, corn cobs were burned for heat, windmills were used to pump water from the ground etc. They were self-sufficient, resourceful and determined to make it in spite of their dire situation. These strengths helped them survive but the skills are largely gone from today’s society. Interesting reading from those who experienced how complex life was ... in a simpler time.

A true chronicle of hope and encouragement

This book begins with a brief history of the grandfather’s emigration to America and his struggles and achievements, but the heart of the stories is his subsequent progeny. I’ve been fascinated by pioneer life since childhood when I was immersed in the stories of Laura Ingalls Wilder, and this book does not disappoint. What is unique here is that it chronicles a family living through some of the most tumultuous times in our modern history: the Great Depression, WW1, WW2. They endured things that would have knocked me to the ground, yet they adapted and kept on, and the overall message is filled with hope. This is no Pollyanna “just be glad” tale; it is real and I cried reading it because there is something here that just about anyone can relate to. The book ends with the youngest son reaching adulthood, but there is a segment at the end telling where everyone is now. It was good to see how the story played out for the people I grew attached to, and I ended the book with a feeling of encouragement for the difficulties I face. It’s a little easier going through something when you know someone else walked the same path, and they ended up alright.

A True Life Historical Narrative

This book that is written by members of the Stevenson family is fascinating for several reasons. First, I know (and knew) many of the persons portrayed in the book. They were cousins of my late first wife. In the 1970s I was able to visit many of the places described and meet those folks. They were hardworking farmers in Nebraska. Secondly, the book reflects a time in America that many of us did not know. We feel put out when our Internet connection is slow or down for part of a day. These people had no running water or indoor plumbing until they were older. I marvel at their "hard" life which to them was simply "normal." This is an encouraging book and I highly recommend it.

This book is a delight to read. Len Stevenson has a gift of being able to take the reader back to another time to experience the hardship and joys of living in a close family during difficult times. Once you start reading you don't want to put it down, you want to know what happens next! Highly recommend.

This book gave me a perspective of family and hometown I never had before. Knowing some of the family I have a whole new appreciation for the strength, faith and love of the generation before me. Excellent read.
