色々な立ち位置の人がそれぞれの考えで行き、出会いと別れを繰り広げてゆく。
奥さんを寝取られた男が他人の奥さんを奪い去ったり。
その奪い去った男が映画撮影に使っていた女優がその男の妻の義理弟が会わせよとしていた人だったり。
1本にするにはちょと時間が足りなかったのかもしれないと思う
メインの話は黒人差別が題材になっている。
この手の差別やいじめは、人種差別ばかりでなくて、対等の権利がある人間関係でもある、自分が妬ましいと感じるのは自分の能力がその人より劣っているからなのに、その現状が受け入れられなくて、相手の方が下なのに生意気なと言う勝手な妄想で、嫉妬をして嫉妬をすればするほどそれはひどくなり、止めるところが無くなる

最後の終わりがなんとも悲しいものだけど、予想がつくと思う

最後にふと思った事、他にも戦い方はあった、けどこんな時代じゃ、状況証拠を固める事も難しかっただろう、でも犠牲を最小限にすると言うのも賢い方法だったと思う。
もし、一番大切な失ったら返ってこないものが何なのかわかっていたならば・・・もし私が彼だったら、子供と妻の為に、先を呼んで、糞を自分で片付けて返ってあの道は二度と通らなかっただろうと思う。そしたら、それだけで済んだ

さらに車を傷つけられ、妻の命を失うことになり、子供の成長を見ることも出来なくなるなんて終わりにならないで済んだだろうなと思う。
違う方法はきっとあったはず、もっと人が信じられていたらと思うのでした。

そして自分の人生も、カッとなってそれに執着しすぎるのはよくないと、いい教訓になりました。

かといって汚い手段で自分だけよければいいやって言う生き方をしていたらきっと悪い方に物事は行ったと思う、消防士達のようにまき沿いで殺されてしまったかのように。

正しい判断は先読みも必要だよねって思いました

E.L.ドクトロウ原作の同名小説（1975年刊行）を基にした映画。今年（2018年）4月に亡くなったミロス・フォアマン監督作品。
2時間35分（長い！）　日本語字幕付き　画質は良いです。

既に引退していたジェームズ・キャグニーが、1作だけカムバックした最後の出演作です（この後、TV映画にもう1本だけ出演）。
『汚れた顔の天使』でキャグニーと共演したパット・オブライエンも出演（ソーの弁護士役）。
また、1970年代はしばらく映画界から遠ざかっていたドナルド・オコナー（『雨に唄えば』）も、久々にダンス教師役として歌と踊りを披露しています。
DVDでもなかなか見つからなかったので、まさかプライム・ビデオで見られるとは！感激して、早速視聴しました。

最初に一言…　「長いです」
ニューヨーク郊外で暮らす一家（父・母・弟・息子）を中心に、史実とフィクションを織り交ぜて、1900年代初頭（第1次大戦前）のアメリカの様相を描き出した作品です。
特定のキャラクター／エピソードを描いたというよりは、何人ものキャラクターやエピソードが織り成す大河ドラマのような作品です。

大まかな出来事としては：
・いわゆる「ファム・ファタール」のイヴリン・ネズビットをめぐってソーという富豪の息子が殺人事件を起こす
・ニューヨーク郊外の「父」「母」の家で黒人の捨て子が見つかり、その子と母親（サラ）を引き取ることになる
・その子の父親（コールハウス）が「父」「母」の家を訪れ、サラと結婚することになる
・ところが、コールハウスが車を運転中に、消防団員らに嫌がらせを受け、車をメチャメチャにされる…
この後、事態は思わぬ方向に展開していきます…

私は原作は読んでいないのですが、原作ではおそらく、多数の登場人物の背景やエピソードがもう少し細かく書かれているのだろうと思います。原作者は、映画ではなく、複数話からなるTV映画のような形での映像化を考えていたようで、きっとその方が原作には合っていただろうと思います。映画では時間の制約もあって、残念ながら少し散漫な印象を受けました。

ただ、映像は息を飲むほど贅沢で美しく、見応えがあります。私は、（キャグニーがいつ出てくるのだろう？）という興味もあって飽きずに最後まで見られました。

キャグニーは、最後の方でニューヨーク市警察委員長として登場します。
『民衆の敵』他の凄みのあるキャグニーの役を思い浮かべると、この配役は恐ろしいものがあります…

キャグニーやミロス・フォアマン監督のファン、そして20世紀初頭のアメリカに興味のある方におすすめします。

アメリカでも評価はそれほど高くなく、同じような20世紀初頭のニューヨークが主な舞台のゴッドファーザー PART II（同じパラマウント配給作品）の倍以上の製作費をかけて、大赤字だったようです。長いと言っても155分ですから、ゴッドファーザー PART IIの200分より短いです。
序盤どう話が繋がってくるかわからないのですが、エリザベス・マクガヴァンとメアリー・スティーンバージェンは本当にコスチューム・プレイが合う、と思いながら観ているうちに、どんどん面白くなってきます。
これだけの大作にもかかわらずアカデミー賞でもゴールデングローブ賞でも、まったくの無冠に終わり、せめて衣裳デザイン賞くらい取れなかったものかと思いますが、この年の衣裳デザイン賞は炎のランナーだったんですね。
豪華超大作にしては、キャスティングに派手さが無かったのが、評価が高くない理由でしょうか？アマゾン・プライムで配信中の物は、画質も良く、おそらくライオンズゲイトが買い取ってデジタルリマスターして配給している物だと思われます。今後、作品自体の再評価もされていくんじゃないかと思います。

When I first heard about "Ragtime", I had listened to the song "Make Them Hear You" from the Broadway Musical adaption of it. Them my mind asked me "I wonder if "Ragtime" was ever made into a movie.", and the answer was, "Yes". I was curious about it since I have never had read the book, seen the movie, and never even saw any production of the musical. I only just heard that "Make Them Hear You" number. I just recently bought the DVD from Amazon and watched it last night and I thought, WOW!, I Didn't even know that these people could act. Now that I have watched the movie, I would LOVE to see it as a musical stage play if it ever comes to my hometown.

Der Film "Ragtime" von 1981 entwirft mittels seiner guten und zeitentsprechenden Ausstattung ein bilderbogen-mäßiges Porträt vom New York des Jahres 1906.
Als erstes wird dabei, anhand des historischen Mordfall an dem Stararchitekten Stanford White, ein Einblick in die dekadente New Yorker High Society gewährt und die bizarre Dreiecksbeziehung zwischen White und dessen Mörder, dem millionenschweren Industriellensprößling Harry K. Taw, zu dem Model und Revuegirl Evelyn Nesbit im nachfolgenden "Prozess des Jahrhunderts" satirisch beleuchtet.
Das Einwanderer-Milieu wird kurz durch die Nebenhandlung um den Straßenkünstler Tateh in Szene gesetzt.
Die eigentliche Haupthandlung dreht sich jedoch um den schwarzen Pianisten Coalhouse Walker Jr. und dessen angehenden Frau Sarah mit der einen Sohn hat. Coalhouses Zukunftspläne werden jedoch durch eine rassistisch-
gesinnte Feuerwehrtruppe unter Führung des schmierigen Brandmeisters Conklin durchkreuzt, die vom Neid auf Coalhouses neuen Ford Model T, verzehrt diesem den Weg versperren und schließlich das Fahrzeug mutwillig beschädigen.
Da Coalhouses Versuche die Bande auf dem Rechtsweg zu Schadensersatz zu verpflichten nichts fruchten, unternimmt
Sarah naiverweise den Versuch sich beim US-Vizepräsidenten Gehör zu verschaffen, wird dabei jedoch brutal niedergeknüppelt und stirbt an den Verletzungen. Der endgültig zur Verzweifelung gebrachte Coalhouse greift daraufhin, zusammen mit einigen Gleichgesinnten, zum Mittel der Gewalt und bläst zur Jagd auf Feuerwehrmänner
bis im Genugtuung getan wird. Die Vendetta gipfelt schließlich in der Besetzung Morgan Bibliothek und in einem großen Polizeieinsatz (geführt von James Cagney als Commissioner Rhinelander Waldo).

Insgesamt ein sehr gut ausgestatter tragischkomischer Film der das New York der 1900er Jahre überzeugend darstellen kann, ein Zeichen gegen Rassismus setzen will und der einer moderneren Version von Kleists "Michael Kohlhaas" entspricht.
Aufgrund der etwas eigenwilligen und sich langsam entwickelnden Handlung blieb ihm freilich der große Durchbruch und Kassenerfolg verwehrt.

This movie will make you angry. I'm amazed by this movie now as much as I was when I first saw it. It's a movie about racism from an American perspective. The cast and the events should be screened again as its relevancy is extremely topical. Some movies imprint themselves upon your mind and this is one of those. I would never do this to another fellow human. The acting is superb and I believe this was James Cagney's last movie. It was directed by Milos Foreman and has an excellent cast. Well worth your time and your expense. I believe All Lives Matter and this clearly reveals a very sad side of humanity. We have a long way to go to stop this kind of racism, no matter who it is done to.

I first read E. L. Doctorow’s “Ragtime” not long after it was published in 1975 (I still have not reviewed it on Amazon). A wild romp in the America before the First World War; a sui generis kind of novel with enough of Pynchon’s “Gravity’s Rainbow” in it to push my hot button. Fact and fiction, mixed in a believable fashion. Unlikely to impossible meetings of real historical characters: Henry Ford, Sigmund Freud, Emma Goldman, Emiliano Zapata, J.P. Morgan, Harry Houdini and a dozen others.

The movie was released in 1981. This was my first viewing of it. I noted from the “Trivia” section that Robert Altman, a director I have immense respect for, was first choice for this movie, and it is his kind of movie, if somehow, he can be pigeonholed into a “kind.” It did not state why it did not come to be. Milos Forman, the second choice, however, did a truly admirable job. To make the movie manageable, the director had to shear down that vast array of famous characters. Still, a few made the cut, like Houdini. The largest sideshow, and one that I was familiar with, since Harry K. Thaw was from my hometown of Pittsburgh, was his very public murder of the famous architect, Stanford White, over his prior relationship with Thaw’s wife. Thaw’s subsequent trial, one of the “rich and famous” became another “trial of the century,” much like the O.J. Simpson spectacle.

The movie opens in 1906, a year that resonates with me, since my first home, in the Victorian section of Atlanta was built then. As in the movie, I had a big front sitting porch. The fantasy is always that of a simpler, better time, waiting for the cool of the evening, pre-air-conditioning, greeting neighbors on their postprandial strolls. A simpler time of better values, pre-Twitter and all the other electronic interference. It works if one is willing to crop out polio, legal racial segregation, women being denied the right to vote and a few other things.

The strength of this movie is that it does not crop. The star is Coalhouse Walker, Jr., a man who maintains his dignity under the most trying of circumstance, even when he walks up on that large front porch and they ask him to go around to the back door. For he is Black. His mission is to do “the right thing,” for he got a woman pregnant and now that he has the financial means, has come back to help her raise the baby. Not to mention, love her. Responsible. His financial means comes from being able to tickle the ivories; he plays a piano, brilliantly in a bar.

“Dignified” can also be viewed as being “uppity,” a word I have not heard much of, since my early days in Atlanta, in the ‘60’s. The sentence invariably expressed more than a gentle hint of disapproval: “Oh no, we don’t hate our (various terms, but NEVER the n-word, which is only used by the lower classes)… as long as they are not “uppity.”

Walker, excellently played by Howard E. Rollins, would never have considered himself “uppity” though those ivories provided him the money to purchase his own model T Ford, and he was thus the source of considerable envy by those who could not afford such a fancy car and did use the n-word.

James Cagney personified the “I’m Mr. Tough Guy” role, invariably working for the Department of Justice, in the ‘50’s black and white movies, so much so that he provided an apt metaphor for describing an Assistant United States Attorney. I didn’t even realize that it was Cagney, in his twilight years, that was playing Police Commissioner Waldo, until the credits rolled. The aforementioned envy set off a chain of events that would lead “Mr. Tough Guy” to order “uppity’s” execution.

I’ve much admired the actor Samuel L. Jackson, particularly for his role as narrator in the tribute to James Baldwin entitled “I am not your Negro.” “Ragtime” was Jackson’s first movie. I timed it: Jackson was provided 2 seconds of “face time,” the most fleeting of glimpses of him as a young man, as “Gang Member 2.”

From the front sitting porches of 1906, through the ‘70’s of the novel and the ‘80’s of the movie, “Ragtime” remains an exceedingly relevant film for viewing and taking action against the executions of today. 5-stars, plus.
