Wow... how to put this into words...
When this arrived I threw it on just to quickly check the image quality, intending to watch it when I had some free time. Almost two hours later, unable to turn it off at any point, I'm compelled to sit at the keys for a quick review...
I've never bought into the label of Greatest British Female Vocalist as applied to Dusty. To me, quite clearly and beyond argument, she was and remains the Greatest Female Vocalist of All Time, period, and this superbly crafted DVD I think frames that conclusion in gold and hangs it so high on the wall that it can't be reached.
This is Dusty naked - no interviews interrupting old clips, no guest stars, no bogus sets, and every note is sung and played live. Just Dusty, three backup singers and a great orchestra offstage, and crazy, very receptive audiences.
Dusty is in great spirits, she's funny, clever, very playful, chatty and Dear God could this woman sing. From that breathy intimate voice that sounds like it's coming from the pillow next to you... to that rockin', belting, jazz drenched powerhouse voice that knocks every ball out of the park be it Motown or supper club standards... this girl could seemingly do anything.
Only the extras are in color - the central body of the disc is in glorious, crystal clear and razor sharp black and white, and she's never looked better. That hair, those eyes, that smile... she's simply stunning. Still photos never did her justice - Dusty was a beautiful woman.
Great camerawork thoughout, with tons of lingering closeups and a genuine understanding of what the slower songs are all about.
This leaves all the other Dusty DVD's far behind. It's the one you've been waiting for, it really is. If you're a serious Dusty fan, imagine what you'd want in a live disc... well, this is better. You'll laugh, a few songs may put a tear in your eye, but you'll mostly be reminded of what a gigantic talent this woman was. Sit in the dark and watch her sing "If You Go Away"... and you may find the earth stops turning for a couple of minutes.

Simon Bell's review here (the first review) rules. I've just played this DVD through and thoroughly enjoyed it. Dusty effortlessly goes from Tamla, soul, cabaret classics to folk and Broadway show standards to power ballads all in single live takes. Often she keeps her soul preference to the last song which goes over the end credits. She plays acoustic guitar and sings folk songs like 'My Lagan Love' (Lagan Love links her to Kate Bush as the Springfields' 'Silver Threads and Golden Needles' links her to Linda Ronstadt - she referenced both of these artists in her 1979 concerts). Dusty sings a storming version of The Temptations' 'Get Ready' (more in the style of Chuck Jackson).
She performs mostly in long restricting dresses. It's only in the last episode that we see Dusty in a shorter dress and become more herself (later outside thse BBC productions she would look more comfortable in fashionable trouser outfits). These dress codes symbolise for me her different freedoms. Nevertheless, we see a woman who could sing anything live and it makes me sympathise with her record producers because she could just do it in one take but her quality control, which frustrated all those producers, means we have a catalogue of perfect Dusty recordings to listen to. The extras on this DVD are in colour and include Dusty singing 'I Am Woman' a powerful counterpoint to those passive love songs that sold in droves in the UK. Directly after 'Woman' she sings ' Since I Fell For You'; I was amazed by the change of gear from anthem to ballad; you get this gear control all through the BBC shows. And we also get an historically important interview around the time of her 1979 'come back' and cancelled UK tour apart from the London dates (why didn't the producer limit her initial concerts to the Albert Hall and perhaps the Palladium where she could have performed for several nights?). Dusty's a bit embarrasssed but what came across to me is that she was just such a nice person. You see her shyness, warmth, humility, sense of humour and joie de vivre in her 1960's BBC performances and also in this interview.
I would definitely buy more Dusty DVD sets of Dusty's TV performances (I already have the People Get Ready DVD). It would be great to have a DVD of Dusty on the Rolf Harris Show singing 'Up on the Roof' (in any available quality) and the USA Burt Bacharach special where she sings 'Knowing When to Leave' - these great tracks are only available so far on an excellent 'Dusty Bulletin' CD. Just buy this DVD. It's an education. That so much soulful music could come out of this quietly spoken, 5' 2" Lady Penelope (Thunderbirds) lookalike is mind blowing.
Universal have produced this DVD with care and attention. Even the packaging is high quality so the DVD makes for a good gift. I played the DVD through a very high quality system - don't listen to any gripes about the sound - it's fine.
This DVD showcases the talent Dusty had....her voice was phenomenal - clear, strong, on pitch - and raised the bar for her competition. If you loved her music, this DVD should be a winner!
