vibrato, double stops, rhythmic bowing

This was a great introduction to the music and teaching styles of several wonderful musicians. As a second year beginning fiddle student, I learned:

1. vibrato basics from Kenny Kosek, which I practiced while playing the waltz, "Southwind," as taught by Jim Wood

2. a cool bluegrass song ("Bury Me Beneath the Willow") with lots of double stops and slides

3. a Tommy Jarrell bowing pattern, from Brad Leftwich

4. and some really cool pulsing and rhythmic bowing from Bruce Molsky, on "Candy Girl"

All-in-all this was a great investment. I will probably pick up a couple more Homespun instructional DVDS (Bruce Molsky, and Brad Leftwich) after I complete the lessons in this one.

the only vignette worth the money were the subtleties of Jay Ungar's Ahokan Farewell. The rest wasn't worth a quarter of the money, particularly Phillips' virtuoso. How many people are looking to play in keys with five sharps? Yikes, Stacey, don't you get it?

For me, I look at this DVD as a good sampler of various fiddle teachers and styles. Each instructor is very good and all of them go slow enough to follow and give tips on how to play. It's a good DVD. I think all of the instructors have their own DVD(s) out also. So if you like a particular one, you can follow up with it. My favorite was Jay Ungar; I already had Jay Ungar's Waltzes, Airs and Haunting Melodies which is a great DVD.

I was very excited to recieve my DVD and immediatly opened it to watch it. I love the lessons provided, It's like a sampler to see who you would enjoy learning more from, as I do believe all of the fiddlers have their own dvds out. I think this is a gread DVD for the price. your basically learning one or two songs from some of the most respected fiddlers around.

Homespun videos are good quality. Getting this sampler was ideal for previewing the instructional talents of 8 fiddlers. (Some struggle to pass on info, others seem better.) Like any instructional video, it exposes the personalities of these fine musicians - a side you may never see in performance videos.
