ピーター・バラカンがNHK-FMのWeekend Sunshineでこの映画を紹介していたので興味を持ち、2019年2月にそれを新宿の映画館で観た。

Northern Soulとは、この映画では1974年に始まったイングランド北部での米国のソウル・ミュージックとダンスのムーブメントとの設定。舞台はランカシャー。但し、実際は1960年代に既に始まっていた。モータウンとそれに影響された音楽（シンシナティやデトロイトなどの小さなレーベルのもの）で、珍しい曲が好まれた。例えば、“Stick By Me Baby”（ザ・サルヴァドールズ, Wise World Record）などである。

なかなか面白かったので、このCD2枚とDVD1枚のセットを購入した。CDの1枚目はサウンドトラックで、27曲も入っている。CDの2枚目は本作の監督であるエレイン・コンスタンティン（1965年にマンチェスター近くのベリーで生まれた女性で元々は写真家。本作が最初の監督作品）の発想の元となった曲を集めたもので、これにも27曲入っている。DVDは、コンスタンティン監督と著名DJのリチャード・シアリングへのインタヴューである。

ブックレットは写真を含めて27ページもある。コンスタンティン監督のインタヴューが記載されている。

DVDでコンスタンティン監督は、ノーザン・ソウルを理解して踊れる多数の若者を集めるのに苦労したと述べている。友達の友達の友達を、youtubeなどを活用して集めたそうである。

音楽はB級だが、情熱と雰囲気が感じられ、買って満足している。

Top drawer Northern Soul collection with plenty of otherwise hard to get tracks

First off it's important to note that there are two versions of this album, the first a single disc just showcasing 27 tracks featured in the film Northern Soul, the second adding an extra CD including music that inspired the film and a bonus DVD with two features - an interview with the film's director Elaine Constantine and an audio interview with original Wigan Casino DJ Richard Searling, with both enlightening. I'm reviewing the three disc version.

The film Northern Soul was a passion for Elaine Constantine taking 15 years to scrape together the funding to develop it, some via crowd funding. This labour of love is evident in her deep knowledge of Northern Soul shown by her superb personal track selection. 54 tracks, 26 featuring in Kev Roberts' definitive Northern Soul 500 or the Bubbling Under 100. As a relative newcomer to the genre I've so far amassed 30 principally multi-disc sets yet what makes this collection stand out is I've not previously encountered 14 of those 26 tracks on any previous collection. The hard to find otherwise tracks are:

But that's not all as Constantine's selection of tracks from the deeper catalogue is also sublime - there's plenty here I've been introduced to for the first time and nothing is makeweight. A thoroughly well-curated collection and at just £8 an absolute steal.

Es fantástica esta recopilación para los q nos gusta esta música, pero la descripción del producto me ha despistado, no especifican en ningun sitio el contenido concreto del dvd, de hecho pensaba q era la pelicula... en AMAZON tienen q aplicarse más en las descripciones de los productos.

Brilliant Northern Soul compilation

**Disclaimer, I am a music lover of many genres, and only recently started listening to tracks labelled as 'Northern Soul'**

This is a brilliant 2 CD compilation. There are around 20 tracks mainly on CD 1 which in my opinion represent some of the major Northern Soul big tracks. Interspersed in this are a great mix of newish/modern and later Northern Soul arrivals. The standout tracks on this compilation for me are:

'Stick By Me Baby' - The Salvadores - worth buying the CD for on it's own!
'You Don't Mean It' - Towanda Barnes
'The Magic Touch' - Melba Moore - If you like this check out the Bobby Fuller Four original.
'Crying over you' - Duke Browner

The only oddity is Your Autumn Of Tomorrow - The Crow, which is more fast funk than soul, it is funny how some songs appropriated by the Northern Soul scene when they slightly don’t fit the bill, like Come on Train by Don Thomas.

What an epic collection, The film is quite good too, There is a fantastic sequence when they are at Wigan Casino (I guess) dancing to 'Crying over you' Duke Browner.
